- Do I need a VPN in Turkey?
- Most of the open web works without one. People reach for a VPN when a platform is blocked or slowed: Discord was blocked in October 2024, Roblox stayed blocked for almost two years until June 2026, and X, YouTube and Instagram were restricted for up to two days during the protests of March and September 2025. A VPN also stops hotel and airport wifi from seeing which sites you visit.
- Why does my VPN slow to a crawl in Turkey instead of just failing?
- Because the filtering throttles recognised VPN protocols rather than only blocking them outright. The connection can technically stay up while being too slow for anything real. Traffic that isn't recognisable as a VPN in the first place doesn't get throttled.
- Does it get worse around elections or protests?
- Yes. Filtering and throttling both tend to tighten during politically sensitive periods and ease off afterwards, so something that worked reliably before an event may need the app's automatic fallback to keep working during one.
- Is it legal to use a VPN in Turkey?
- Using one for personal purposes is broadly legal. That doesn't unblock a platform that is blocked outright for everyone, and we are a UK company and cannot give you legal advice specific to Turkey.
- Does it work on iPhone?
- Yes, through Shadowrocket, a £2.99 App Store app. You create your Pangea configuration in your account, add it to Shadowrocket once and choose a server inside the app. There is no native iPhone app yet.
- Do I need to pay with cryptocurrency?
- No. Card payments work normally for Turkish customers. Monero is available too, for anyone who would rather not use a card.
