VPN for travelling

Two things break when you travel. Hotel and airport wifi is open to everyone else sitting on it, and services you pay for at home start behaving oddly once your connection looks like it comes from somewhere else. A VPN fixes the first properly and the second sometimes. Pangea encrypts everything on the local network and gives you a connection from London, Amsterdam or New York.

What goes wrong on the road

Shared wifi

Hotel and cafe networks put you on a segment with strangers. Encryption is what stops the operator, and everyone else on it, seeing where you go.

Captive portals

The sign-in page has to load before the tunnel comes up, so you connect to the wifi, accept the terms, then start the VPN. Our kill switch holds traffic until it is up.

Region-locked services

Banking apps and government services often lock up when the connection arrives from another country. Coming through your home region is usually what fixes it.

Networks that filter

Some countries and many corporate guest networks inspect traffic and block VPNs outright. That is the case the transport cascade exists for.

How the connection holds

The app works down the same five in order and keeps whichever holds. On an ordinary hotel network the first attempt connects straight away; on a filtered one the fallbacks are the point.

Auto mode finds the way

The app tries each transport in order until one connects. Or pin one in the Connection Method setting.

Before you start

  • Connect through London, Amsterdam or New York, with more locations available on request.
  • One account covers four devices, so your laptop and phone are both included.
  • Streaming services actively block VPN addresses, so we make no promises about any particular one.
  • Windows and macOS apps; iPhone connects through Shadowrocket (£2.99 on the App Store). Android is on the waiting list.

Questions

Is hotel wifi actually dangerous?
Less than it used to be, because almost everything is HTTPS now. What the network still sees without a VPN is which sites and services you connect to, and that alone is a reasonable thing to want to keep private.
Will my banking app work abroad through a VPN?
Usually better than without one, because connecting through your home country looks more like your normal pattern. Some banks flag VPN addresses anyway. We cannot guarantee any specific bank.
Should I leave the VPN on all the time when travelling?
On untrusted wifi, yes. The kill switch means that if the tunnel drops, traffic stops rather than falling back to the open network.
Can I use one account on my laptop and my phone?
Yes. An account covers four devices.
